Anguilla Day Boat Race Photos

Celebrating #Anguilla50 with the Anguilla Day Boat Race

Anguilla Day celebrations cue the start of summer. May is winding down and June is beginning as we celebrate the anniversary of the 1967 Anguilla Revolution on May 30th. With the 50th anniversary upon us, this year has been extra special in the efforts the island has put in to celebrating the revolutionaries, island tradition and heritage. By the end of May, the weather begins to sizzle just a bit more; the seas sit calmly, perfect for days of boating and paddleboarding; and cultural festivities begin to come alive.

The Anguilla Day boat race is the kick off, and there’s no better way to celebrate than by being on a boat watching the sailboats pass by on their journey around the island.

Loaded up with guests, we took FrangiCat on a spin around the island, departing Meads Bay and heading east to Little Bay, then onto Shoal Bay and Scrub Island before making our way around the southern side. We continued on, back to Sandy Ground where the races culminate in a beach party to celebrate the winners with island BBQ and music.

For us, no boat trip is complete without a stop at Little Bay, and it’s a place on the island that always stuns me with its beauty; the dramatic cliff side, the turquoise waters, and bright white sliver of sand the waxes and wanes throughout the season. On Anguilla Day it’s not quite the calm oasis that it is most other days, but it still brings the natural beauty, complemented by soca music blaring from neighboring boats.

For many of visitors and expats, it’s an excuse for a lively boat day. For locals, boat racing has cultural ties though and is part of the tradition of the island, dating back to early days of trading. As the island’s national sport, Anguillians are out en masse on racing days, watching boats zip by from the beach or from clifftops with binoculars in hand. Most locals support a boat (there are few people here that we’ve met that don’t have a boat that they root for), and many organizations on the island help back a boat with financial contributions (you’ll see sails with logos on them, each boasting their sponsors).

We pulled into Sandy Ground ahead of the sailboats in time to watch the race culminate with a winner swooping into shore, nestled right next to us to claim its win. I’m not much for the beach party scene but it’s always prime for people watching and taking in the festivities. Plus, if you’re in the mood for fresh of the BBQ ribs and chicken, you’re in luck. 👌🏽

A huge congrats to Real Deal who claimed the win this go around! We’re excited for a summer of boat races and festivities ahead. The countdown to Carnival is officially on!

Destination Wedding in Anguilla: Mr. & Mrs. Tillman

Anguilla Destination Wedding at the Frangipani Beach Resort

A destination wedding in Anguilla is something out of a storybook, and the evening of Mark and Eryn’s nuptials was nothing less than magical. What made the experience even more special? Their friends and family had been here for a few days in advance and would wake up with them as newly minted Mr. & Mrs. the following day.

Pre and Post-Wedding Festivities

With a full buyout at the Frangipani Resort, Mark and Eryn’s group occupied the entire hotel for 3+ nights, where the resort morphed into a private villa dedicated to their experience. Eryn, planner extraordinaire, mapped out events for the three-day itinerary that had guests delving into a range of what Anguilla has to offer, balancing regular activities with a healthy dose of poolside marination.

Most people will tell you that a visit to Little Bay is a must during your time in Anguilla. Accessible only by boat, Eryn and Mark had an afternoon scheduled with Frangipani’s boat, Relentless, shuttling guests to Little Bay to watch Mark & Eryn ‘take the plunge’ from the famous rock at Little Bay. Not a bad way to kick off a wedding weekend, right?

The day after the ceremony (see below for ceremony and reception photos!), Eryn and Mark hosted an awesome beach BBQ on Meads Bay where guests had the option of chicken, ribs or fish for a toes-in-the-sand dinner. To top it off? A bonfire with a s’mores station to cap off the evening.

The Ceremony + Reception

Eryn and Mark’s wedding day was a gorgeous affair; a chic beachy ceremony with perfectly placed touches. The bride walked along the white sand beach, dress trailing in the sand, to the ceremony site. Local musician, Dumpa, played Here Comes the Bride on steel pan while onlookers watched the bride walk down the aisle to the archway, just steps from the water. The duo’s personal pastor came to the island to officiate for an incredibly heartfelt ceremony.

Straw Hat Restaurant provided a gourmet Caribbean dinner which was complemented by Tropical Treats ice cream for dessert. For reception music, Darvin Mussington and Keira got the crowd dancing and kept the energy up until it was time for a send off. Can you beat dancing in the sand with sparklers?

And then there was the wish lantern grand finale, something that is always so fun and mesmerizing to watch. In truth, the setting has to be just right for the wish lanterns to take flight, and this night brought all of the right elements. The Tillmans now hold the record for most wish lanterns to make it into the sky (16!), which means lots of well wishes for the newly hitched duo.

Cheers to a gorgeous destination wedding in Anguilla! We couldn’t be happier to watch these two tie the knot, and couldn’t feel more honored to be a part of their big day. Congrats, Mr. & Mrs. Tillman – here’s to a lifetime of happiness!

Anguilla’s AHTA Gala

AHTA Gala, Anguilla

Anguilla’s ‘Rising Star’ at the Frangipani

On December 5th, Frangipani’s management team took part in the island’s AHTA Gala to honor the island’s best, from Anguilla’s best ferry service to Employee of the Year and Entertainer of the Year. In addition, Juman Hughes, Frangipani’s nominee for Employee of the Year joined the team for the evening.

Frangipani General Manager, Scott Kircher, had the honor of presenting a special award for the evening which went to Entertainer of the Year, Sprocka. Sprocka is a great friend of the resort, and his much-anticipated Christmas album makes it to the island this week {you can get your copy at Petals Boutique beginning this weekend}.

An extra special honor went to our very own Juman Hughes, who won the AHTA’s newest award, the Rising Star award, which recognizes an employee on the island who has overcome obstacles in life to excel in the workplace. As anyone who has stayed here can attest, Juman certainly excels! The win was an exciting one not only for Juman, but for the entire Frangipani family. Cheers, Juman, for a great three years and for an incredibly bright future ahead!

Beach Hopping Boat Trip

Frangipani Beach Resort, Anguilla, BWI

With guests in tow, we headed out for our first beach hopping boat trip of the season! The weather was perfect, the seas were calm, and all of our guests were fabulous, as usual. We made the rounds to Prickly Pear Cays for a float and a bit of snorkeling, then headed to legendary Little Bay where three of the bunch took the plunge from the famous rock. Following a delicious group lunch at da’ Vida (frozen mojitos, please!), we took a slow cruise around to the south side of the island to glimpse different beaches by boat. Perfection.

August Thursday Beach Party

Private party at the Frangipani Beach Resort

After the madness of August Monday had come to a close, we were gearing up for Thursday’s events. The Meads Bay boat races takes place on Thursday, making the Frangipani the perfect place to watch the races while taking in the energy of onlookers.

In honor of the races, the resort hosted a private party for in-house guests, complete with live music, appetizers from Straw Hat restaurant and a DIY bar to whip up rum cocktails. For many, it was the highlight of Carnival week. Floating in the pool, watching the boats take off, and listening to the Mussington Brothers play while the sun began to set was absolute perfection on every level. Check out this quick video of the Mussington Brothers in action – absolutely incredible:

Here’s another quick clip captured on an iPhone:

Anguilla Carnival Celebrations

Anguilla Carnival, #AXASumFest
Snapshots from August Monday

For those that have visited peaceful Anguilla during any other week of the year, you’ll know that the island is synonymous with utter tranquility. Besides the sounds of laughter, ocean lapping up on the sand, and the clinking of rum punch glasses, the beaches are generally a place of unadulterated relaxation.

Then comes Carnival week, Anguilla’s Summer Festival, with August Monday’s festivities. During this one week – this one day – the island is transformed. BBQ stations line Sandy Ground, Heineken tents dole out rum punch in quantity, and a stage situated in the sand is home to live bands that get the crowd  dancing  from day to night. Boats from St. Martin and St. Barths pull into Sandy Ground to tie up and celebrate at one of the Caribbean’s biggest beach parties. It’s a holiday on the island, and for many, the countdown to August Monday begins 364 days in advance. Even those that prefer to skip the madness of the beach party should pop down for a moment to take it in; it’s people watching at its finest and it’s an event that captures the spirited culture of Anguilla and the joie de vivre of its people.

The Frangipani Beach Resort was completely booked up for this year’s Carnival celebration and it was a week for the books. For some guests it was a first. For many, it was a tradition. Here are some snapshots from August Monday:
